Sustainable Toasters

Eco-Design Study
How can a sustainable toaster be designed to appeal to users ranging from people devoted to
eco-design products, to people who don't understand the need for sustainable products?

Can one toaster fit their differing lifestyles?

Concept Ideation

Compact Toaster
This design reduces the amount of material used in the toaster. It also has one center heating element in the middle that is shared by both sides to reduce energy use. Its smaller size saves space in the kitchen and its aesthetic blends to fit in to users' lifestyles. After it lives a long life, it can be taken apart so the metal components can be recycled.

Retro Ceramic Toaster
This design has ergonomic improvements from original toasters with the bread slots and at angle. It body is sturdy and made out of ceramic which is less toxic than metal, and has an essence of durability. This design will last a long time and is perfect for users who want a visually appealing, intuitive toaster.

Contemporary Glass Toaster
This concept has a contemporary look with glass panels so the user can see how toasty their bread is getting and that the toaster only uses the amount of energy it needs for the amount of bread in the toaster. Its ceramic and glass body is non-toxic and glass is endlessly recyclable. Its aesthetic is meant to draw users in who might not be interested in buying an eco-friendly product, but would be proud to have a cool looking toaster.

Let's make sustainability mainstream!
